Head And Neck Cancer : How To Prevent It.

Head and neck cancer (HNC) is the most common malignancy among oral cancers, which can be easily diagnosed by its signs, symptoms, treatment, prognosis and prevention. This disease is caused by smoking, drinking alcohol and betel nut chewing. Head cancer is a rare but deadly type of cancer that affects the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms include headaches, dizziness, and confusion. It is usually fatal within a year.  More than 90% of HNC cases in the world occur in developing countries. The highest incidence rates are found in Southeast Asia, India, South America and Eastern Europe.

According to the latest epidemiological data from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), there were 645,000 new cases and 380,000 deaths worldwide in 2012. In China, about one-quarter of people living with cancer die within five years, according to the Ministry of Health in China in 2014. The 5-year survival rate in Chinese cancer patients is lower than 60%, while it is nearly 100% in developed countries.

head and neck cancer symptoms

The majority of oral cancers occur in the following parts of the mouth: lips, tongue, gums, floor of the mouth, palate, oropharynx and epiglottis. Patients can have symptoms of the disease before its occurrence. Symptoms can be painless, including bleeding, and may include numbness, paresthesia, or taste changes. These symptoms may precede an oral lesion by several weeks to months. The most common symptom is a sore that does not heal.  It is important that you look at all your symptoms and discuss them with your doctor. Because neck cancer may be hard to notice or may be so subtle that you don’t know it’s there, you should go to a doctor immediately if you have any of these symptoms. The primary method of diagnosis is through a physical exam. Other methods include imaging studies and biopsy. Treatment options depend on the stage and size of the tumor and include surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

neck cancer lymph nodes

early stage cancer lymph nodes in neck  are small bean-shaped organs found at the ends of blood vessels throughout the body. They contain white blood cells that fight infection. Lymph nodes are sometimes referred to as the “body’s garbage disposal”. Lymph nodes that contain cancerous tumors are referred to as metastatic (sp?) cancer.

Cancer of the neck is a form of cancer that occurs in the cells at the back of the throat. This cancer can spread to the brain and lungs, but most often starts as a lump in the neck. Neck cancer can be difficult to treat because of the structures in the neck, including the airways.
